The employment rate of Indigenous Australians has remained largely unchanged in recent years and it seems unlikely that the Closing the Gap target of halving the employment gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by 2018 will be met. This seminar will present data from the 2016 Census to examine recent labour market successes and failures, and prospects for improving Indigenous labour market outcomes in the future. It will examine employment trends in remote areas following the cessation of the CDEP scheme; the extent to which rapidly increasing educational attainment among the Indigenous population is translating into better labour market outcomes; how the concentration of Indigenous workers in particular occupations is likely to affect their future employment prospects; and prospects for increasing employment participation among those who are currently not employed.

Biography

Danielle Venn is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research at ANU. She holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Melbourne and has previously worked on a range of labour market and social policy issues in academia, government and at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Her current research examines the impact of employment and social policy on the labour market outcomes of Indigenous Australians.
