A National Survey of Indigenous Australians: Options and Implications

Abstract

The papers in this volume were all precirculated at the workshop 'A National Survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Populations: Problems and Prospects'. The main impetus for the workshop was a recommendation for a national survey of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the National Report of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody. This recommendation was endorsed and financed by the Federal Government in March 1992. While the workshop ostensibly focused on the Royal Commission's recommendation, most chapters in this volume address broader issues about the availability of policy-relevant statistical information on Indigenous Australians.
