This paper was presented by Nicholas Biddle at the 'Social Science Perspectives on the 2008 National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Survey' conference, 11-12 April 2001, The Australian National University, Canberra. The session title was 'Education and Indigenous development'.

Nicholas Biddle is a Fellow at CAEPR, ANU. He has a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) from the University of Sydney and a Master of Education from Monash University. He also has a PhD in Public Policy from ANU, where he wrote his thesis on the benefits of and participation in education of Indigenous Australians. Nicholas is currently working on the Indigenous Population project, funded by the Commonwealth and State/Territory Governments. He is also working on a Research Fellowship for the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) and previously held a Senior Research Officer and Assistant Director position in the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Concluding commentary is by Alfred Michael Dockery, Associate Professor in Economics at Curtin University and Director of the Centre for Labour Market Research.
